Calculating and explaining impound storage fees
Updated October 22, 2026 · For towing and impound yards
Storage fees are where most disputes at the release window come from. Usually the problem isn’t the rate; it’s that the owner didn’t know the total until they reached the window, after taking time off work and paying for a ride.
Record the arrival time precisely
Storage is usually charged per day or part of a day from the time the vehicle arrives. Log the arrival date and time at intake, every time, so the total can be worked out later without guessing.
Use your posted or regulated rates
Many cities and states cap towing and storage fees for non-consent and police tows, and many require rates to be posted at the yard. Use the rates that apply to you, keep them in your system rather than in someone’s head, and update them when the rules change.
Tell the owner the total before they come
When the owner calls, give them the total due as of their pickup day, and send it in writing with how to pay. People bring the right payment, the window moves faster, and arguments drop.
Explain the breakdown
- Tow fee.
- Daily storage, with the number of days.
- Any administrative or after-hours gate fee your rules allow.
- The total, and which payment methods you accept.
