Handling unclaimed impounded vehicles
Updated October 22, 2026 · For towing and impound yards
Some vehicles are never claimed. They take up space and earn nothing until you can lawfully dispose of them, usually through a lien sale or auction. The process is set by state law and is strict about notices and timing, so tracking each step matters.
Know your state’s process
States set how long a vehicle must be held, what notices must be sent to the registered owner and lienholders, and how a lien sale or auction must be advertised and run. Get your state’s requirements in writing, from your towing association or the relevant agency, and follow them exactly.
Track the dates
- Date the vehicle arrived.
- Dates each required notice was sent, and to whom.
- The earliest date the vehicle can lawfully be sold.
- Date of sale or disposal, and the outcome.
Review aging vehicles weekly
Sort vehicles by arrival date and look at the oldest each week. Anything approaching a notice deadline gets attention before the deadline, not after.
Mark the status clearly
When a vehicle moves into the lien or auction process, mark it so nobody at the desk quotes a normal release without checking first.
